Color Therapy

This practice is not really a new concept. Color therapy has already been since the ancient Egyptian and Greek times, when they built temple of lights and color. Also color is very prominent in Chinese and Indian traditions as part of their art and medicine.

In the western civilization, color therapy only developed during the later part of 19th century to early part of 20th century. Around the same time, a form of color therapy, called Syntonics, was developed. It was found that profound physiological and psychological changes can be observed from patients by altering the colors of light entering their eyes.

When energy of color enters our bodies, it stimulates the pituitary and pineal glands, which in turn affects secretion of certain hormones which may have a positive or negative effect on the physiological processes of our body. That is why there are times when we found that colors can affect or influence or moods, and behaviour. Colors even have an affect on blind people, who can sense color through the vibration created by its energy within the body.

Scientists have observed that red light stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, while white and blue light stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. Experiments also revealed that certain color can stimulate production of certain hormones, while others inhibit it.

Scientists now believe that the brain has response to different frequencies of flashing light of various colors. It was mentioned that sleep problems can often be cured in one day by this method. Certain color also has an effect on certain disease or disorder. Pain and depression responds well to therapy using flashing bright and colored lights. Treatments have shown that colors can alter neurochemical production in the brain and this account for the positive effects. Photostimulation using flashing opaque white or violet lights was found to induce relaxation, in effect, reduces stress and pain.
